Everything You Need To Know About A Gearmotor

December 21, 2022

A Gearmotor is a type of electric motor that is used to power machinery. It is composed of two main parts: the motor and the gearbox. The motor provides the rotational power, while the gearbox translates that power into linear motion. Gearmotors are used in a wide variety of applications, from car windows and windshield wipers to conveyor belts and industrial robotics.

Gearmotor 101

A Gearmotor is an all-in-one device that combines a motor and a gearbox into a single, compact unit. Gearmotors are used in a wide variety of applications, from personal electric vehicles to heavy industrial machinery. They offer several advantages over separate motors and gearboxes. First, they are more efficient because the gears always mesh and there is no slippage between the two components. Second, they are smaller and lighter than separate motors and gearboxes, which makes them ideal for use in portable or space-saving applications. Third, they tend to be more durable and require less maintenance than separate components.

What are the different types of Gearmotors?

There are three main types of Gearmotors: spur, helical, and bevel. Spur Gearmotors have straight-cut teeth and are the most common type of Gearmotor. They are less expensive than other types of Gearmotors and have high torque capacity. Helical Gearmotor has teeth that are cut at an angle, which reduces noise and vibration. Bevel Gearmotor have gears that are mounted at a right angle to each other, which makes them ideal for use in machinery that has tight space constraints.

Gearmotors are used in a variety of applications where a speed reduction is necessary. One common use for Gearmotors is in conveyor belts, where the motor provides the power to move the belt and the gears reduce the speed of the belt to match the speed of the objects moving along it. Another common application is in vending machines, where the Gearmotor turns a screw that dispenses products from their containers.

Gearmotors can be either AC or DC-powered, and they can be found in both 120V and 240V versions. The most common type of Gearmotor used in North America is the NEMA 34, which has a 1 hp rating and is available in both 120V and 240V versions.
