A Closer Look At An AC Gear Motor And Its Configurations

October 24, 2018

If you’re searching for a gear motor, one of the most important things to consider is what type of motor to opt for. While there are many different types of gear motors,  it’s important to find out whether your application calls for an AC gear motor or a DC gear motor.

If your piece of machinery calls for an AC gear motor, we at Bauer GMC offer wide range of gear motor products suited for your operation!

Be it a DC or AC gear motor – this distinction defines the power source of the motor which can affect certain performance aspects including speed, control, and reliability. In addition, there are also a number of types of gearboxes which vary based on gear arrangement and construction. These different configurations are what dictates the operational characteristics of gearboxes:

Worm Gears

In this AC gear motor arrangement, a worm gear meshes with a wheel at a right-angle configuration while it’s attached to one or more shafts. It is typically used for high reduction and tightly packed power transmission. This type of gear arrangement makes relatively little noise as the gears mesh, is very low maintenance, and offers high precision.

Spur Gears

Spur gears are undoubtedly the most common type of gear. Due to their highly common nature, they tend to be relatively cheap, but can also come in a wide range of gear ratios to match the speed and torque required by specific applications. While spur gears are notorious for being loud when meshing, their cost-effectiveness and versatility are what makes them ideal for a number of functions.

Bevel Gears

Gear arrangements that utilize bevel gears tend to be highly durable. These types of gears mesh at an angled edge, while its teeth can come in both straight and spiral variations. Straight bevel gear teeth are ideal for applications of a slower gear speed while spiral teeth are better suited for applications that call for a higher gear speed.
